Watching video and wanting to look something up usually means the video stops when you switch tabs. Pop-out detaches the player into a draggable small window that keeps playing while you browse elsewhere.
How to open it
Hover over the video and a pop-out button appears in the top right corner; click it. You can also right-click the video and choose pop-out playback.

Supported sites and limits
Most sites using standard players work. Sites with encrypted streams or proprietary players may play but not allow seeking, or may not support pop-out at all.

Does pop-out use more battery?
About the same as in-page playback. The window is smaller so decoding is slightly cheaper, but browsing at the same time raises total power use.
Why does a video refuse to pop out?
The site may use an encrypted stream or a custom player, or it may block pop-out deliberately. Try watching full screen within the page instead.
